ARTIST STATEMENT
As artists, we typically work in isolation, but this enforced isolation created different challenges. All the work submitted has been created during the time of the pandemic shutdown and was made with limited materials and means outside of my studio. With the sudden break from my studio work, I turned to the materials – pens (ink), paper, colored pencils, and watercolors – that I had quickly gathered on my unexpected last day at my studio. The limited materials have actually opened up another pathway into my overall artistic practice. I have always executed works on paper that are independent of my paintings. Drawing is an exploration of ideas that I use to inform my paintings. The recent exploration within the drawing medium created works that pushed the minimal language used within these compositions into a rigorous new direction. The repetition of a grid from drawing to drawing makes it clear that the repetition of the form does not create redundancy. The opposite is true, the simplicity of the means has created a multitude of possibilities for me to continue to explore.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Jean Wolff studied fine arts at the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit and at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, receiving a BFA in studio arts. She then attended Hunter College, CUNY in New York, graduating with an MFA in painting and printmaking. She’s since had group and solo exhibits in various galleries in New York City and internationally, published works in 67 issues of 45 magazines, and is part of the artistic community of Westbeth in Manhattan.
