Our Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, Gessy Alvarez offers developmental editing services for full-length manuscripts (novels, novella, short story or flash fiction collections), and individual short stories and flash fiction.
Gessy Alvarez is an editor and writer specializing in literary fiction. Her stories and essays are published in a variety of literary journals, including The Acentos Review, Sunlight Press, Hobart, Asteri(x), Lunch Ticket, Volume One Brooklyn, Feminine Collective, and other publications. Her short story collection, Taste the World on Your Skin (now titled “Love the Abyss”) was a finalist for the 2018 Katherine Anne Porter Prize. In 2022, her short story collection Love the Abyss was also selected as a semi-finalist for the Hudson Prize (Black Lawrence Press).

Developmental Editing – Rate $50 per 1000 words / $0.05 per word
Editing with a focus on the structure and content of your work. Gessy uses a collaborative approach taking into consideration the author’s stylistic intentions, and offering thoughtful recommendations. Written critiques may be challenging, but the goal is to help the writer make the best possible work. Here are some sample questions addressed in a typical critique: What is this work about? Who is it for? What’s the best way to structure the work? What needs to be included? What needs to be left out? Some big-picture things addressed in the critique include: structure, pacing, theme, and plot.

- Open to all fiction – English-language writers only
- Original, unpublished work only
- No simultaneous submissions
- We reserve the right to decline any work submitted
- A quote request form is required
- Once your quote is approved, client will be asked to complete a standard editorial agreement. Payments will be requested via PayPal or Stripe before commencement of service
NOTE: Work submitted for for-pay DP Editorial Services will not be considered for publication by Digging Press or Digging Through The Fat, and is not eligible for the Digging Press Chapbook Award.
